Where do we stand? Well, book two seems pretty much wrapped up, and now I’m working on book three. (Rocks fall! Everyone dies! Hopefully not.)

I will be attending the Nine Worlds convention in London in August. Other than that, I expect to be keeping my nose to the grindstone. And my shoulder to the wheel. And similar unhelpful contortions, assisted by coffee. Ah coffee, I love you dearly, never leave me.

Currently watching the Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell tv series, which is extremely good. Mind you, the book is even better, so go and read that. I admit to bias. I almost always prefer the book, even if the tv series is a priceless gem and an adaptation of the sort which is only seen once in a lifetime. I think it’s because I get so deeply into the book that I want to have every single moment and every single line in the tv adaptation, or in the movie, and while technically I realise that isn’t possible and won’t be happening, a part of me still regrets it. For instance, the scene in the book where the Gentleman enchants the King and Jonathan, and Jonathan has to perform the “moon before my eyes” charm. Absolutely fantastic in the book. I do accept that they probably couldn’t do it in a tv version. But I still miss it.

(And yes, I would no doubt be a Norrellite. Far happier among my books than at a party.)

Hi! I must express the very well-grounded quality of the series. 😀

I completely fell in love with it since it first just came out on BBC. Interesting to note that usually BBC is not too big about SFX due to budget considerations, but for Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell they definitely combined the best of their actors, director and costume work and digital effects!

I am quite reluctant to buy the book as of now though (as it’s hard on a student’s budget haha) but I am enjoying my self-rewarded Christmas gift – your book The Masked City. I must say, I can’t stop reading it! I will lose sleep over it at some point.

I was also wondering whether there will be more information on Irene, as I found that in two books we know quite little about our protagonist, though I might have simply overlooked some things. I wanted to know more as I am making a fan art and can’t seem to piece together her portrait :<

    Cheers,

From a Vietnamese fan living in UK =)

P.S. Funny thing is, I bought your first book The Invisible Library back home, and then brought it back to UK to make up a collection of the (hopefully) long series!

Thank you very much! I’m delighted that you’re enjoying the books. (I also hope it will be a long series. We’ll see…)

There should be more information about Irene in book 3 and in further books, including on her appearance. I can tell you that she has below-shoulders brown hair, and can look quite attractive when she puts her mind to it, but spends a lot of her time trying to look anonymous instead. If she was an actress, she’d be the sort who got character roles in tv series rather than film star roles as a Hollywood beauty. Unfortunately, my imagination tends not to be very visual in that way… but I’m very flattered that you’d do a fan art of her. 🙂
